It was through poetry that Bùi Chát first gained recognition in Vietnam. In his early days as a poet, he brought to the forefront a unique poetic style that broke away from the paths established by his predecessors.

After a successful poetic career, Bùi Chát complemented his writing with painting. Today, he also expresses himself through painting. For him, both mediums are simply means of self-expression, a way of processing a situation or an emotion.

This is why he calls his painting "situational painting."

Each color, each brushstroke, each action on the canvas is merely the consequence of Bùi Chát's processing of the situations he encounters in the moment.

Bùi Chát’s studio is as singular as his art. It was in this large house in the eastern part of the city, filled with works not only on canvas but also on beds, furniture, and any surface that can receive paint, that we discovered the full scope of the artist’s practice. The place is peaceful and allows Bùi Chát to focus entirely on the subjects he explores through painting, without being distracted by the noise of the city.
